Over rated !! February 10, 2010 C. Fagan (Fl., USA) I wanted a book that would give me a good insight into the principles of Advertising, so I purchased "Ogilvy on Advertising"- based on the good reviews it had on Amazon.
Unfortunately I was dissappointed, as the book is very basic and is more a PR for Ogilvy and the AD campaigns his company executed.
This book is definately over rated !!
This is a must read, but is the info in here "true" anymore? January 8, 2010 Sally Rachels So this is one of the most fun books to read, what an extraordinary writer and thinker. Yet all of us praising this book have to admit that these are not--N-O-T--the kind of ads we do anymore. So why not? Are we all Ogilvy disciples being overruled by people who haven't read this book? Or are we censuring ourselves?
Hard to tell. I think partly consumers have become more skeptical and don't go for the kind of pseudo factual approach he takes in a lot of these ads, but partly it is a combination of self-censorship and giving in to the forces of ignorance.
So read this book, try these techniques freshly combined with modern testing methods--maybe we'll do some neuvo-ogilvy that will bring a renaissance.
Not worth the money January 7, 2010 Michael Bletzinger (Illinois) The book read more like an ode to Ogilvy then a book on the mechanics of advertising. What I was looking for was a book that would improve my skills in convincing people to make cultural changes at work. This book did not help me. I had to get rid of it because my kids saw the naked women advertisement examples.
Great Resource for Print and Online Marketing November 18, 2009 Alexander Raymond (Boulder, CO United States) Of course, David Ogilvy is one of the all-time great advertising execs and copywriters. This is a useful book for anyone who wants to learn more about marketing, copywriting, advertising, or sales letters.
I liked this book because it shared a lot of interesting stories from his life and work, and despite being written over 20 years ago still has lots of timeless information and tips. He writes in an old-fashioned, patrician style that reflects his upbringing and day and age. Although it took a little while to get used to, it's actually quite refreshing.
The rigor that Ogilvy applied to his research and copywriting should be applied in all marketing projects, whether online or offline. With the key concepts of this book, you can dramatically improve the marketing performance of your existing website or advertising project.
Magnificent! November 9, 2009 Igor Kheifets (Arad, Israel) This book shares a lot of valuable lessons in advertising.
The tips Ogilvy gives to the reader are timeless and will continue
to dominate the advertising world for many years to come.
Wise investment for anyone who's looking to improve his marketing.
